Sump pumps are used to prevent flooding in your basement. They do this by removing all of the excess water that is left in your sump pit. It is important for you to understand how to fix it should it break.

Step 1 – Quickest Fix

The quickest fix is to see if the pump is actually plugged in. Make sure that your hands are completely dry before you touch the cord.

Step 2 – Breaker Box

Check out the breaker box if the pump is actually plugged in. You may have tripped circuits or burnt fuses.

Step 3 – Check Motor

You will be able to know if the motor is running by feeling the actual pump. If you feel that it is running but you see no movement in the water then you may have a clog. If this is the case, you will need to look in the drainpipe or the pump screen for the possible clog. Make sure the pump is unplugged before you check either one of these.

Step 4 – Blockage

You may have a blockage in the water inlet. If this is the case, then you should feel along the bottom of your sump pump, on the intake screen. There may be a buildup of plastic or lint that needs to be removed.

Step 5 – Clean Debris

There could be debris that has become caught on the screen. Make sure that the debris is completely removed from the pit and is properly disposed. This is to prevent it from coming into contact with the screen again.

Step 6 – Drain Clog

You may have a clog in your drain line that could be causing issues. You will need to get the line disconnected at your pump to check. Do this by undoing a rubber and hose clamp joint or a screw together union. Once you have done this, run the pump to check for any water movement. Little to no movement could indicate a clog.

Step 7 – Call Professional

You may find that after all of this you may still have to call a plumber. Make sure that you tell them all of the troubleshooting that you have already done.
