The kids have left home and your old house is just too big. You have decided to downsize. After selling your house and finding a nice condo with a view of the ocean, your attention quickly turns to the moving process. You take a quick look around your house and realize everything will not fit in the new place and you’re going to have to put some stuff in storage.

Moving involves hiring a moving and storage company to haul all of your stuff to its new home. You can do most of the packing so everything is ready for the movers on the day of the move. It is important to organize your things into boxes based on where they need to go. Label your dishes, glasses, flatware as Kitchen. Bedroom 1 or Bedroom 2 for things you keep in your bedroom. You can also name boxes by their contents. Label boxes that contain books, toys, clothes, tools and other items that can be grouped together, so it will make it easy when it comes time to unpack.

Keep an inventory of all the boxes by numbering each box. A written list with the number and contents will be helpful in making sure that all of your things arrived safely. If you have 85 boxes when you start, you should have 85 boxes when you get to your new place.

When you get there and start to unpack and realize that you don’t have enough room to store everything, you may need to call a mini-storage warehouse and rent a space to keep all of your extra stuff until you can decide what to do with it. If you need anything more than a ten by ten space, you definitely have more things than you’ll ever need. Consider having a yard sale or putting some items on EBAY.

Remember, you were moving because you did’nt need such a big house and wanted to downsize and simplify your life. Do you really need four televisions for your new, two bedroom condo? Moving can be emotional and sometimes people want to keep their stuff (perhaps as a tie to the past) even if it is not really needed. For those situations, a storage unit makes sense.
