Munich, Germany is a quaint yet cosmopolitan city in the German state of Bavaria. The city is located on the banks of the Isar river and just north of the Bavarian Alps. It is Germany’s third largest city.

The city was founded in 1158 by Benedictine monks, from which the city’s native name M%C3%BCnchen derives. It was a key city of the Holy Roman Empire, and flourished during the Gothic arts revival, the German counter reformation, and both the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In 1806, Munich became the capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Its historical buildings and streets were meticulously restored after Allied bombing in World War II. Today, Munich is a center of German economy and tourism. With its quaint historical buildings, thriving culture, famous beer, and proximity to world-class skiing in the Alps, Munich has appeal for every visitor.

Arts and Entertainment

Munich boasts many renowned museums. The German Museum is one of the biggest and oldest science museums worldwide. The Kunstareal district holds the Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne, State Antiquities Collection, and many other important galleries.

One can enjoy Munich’s picturesque architecture in the old inner city, or Altstadt. The large open square called Marienplatz contains the Old and New Town Halls and Munich’s well-known Glockenspiel. Fascinating churches, including the famous Frauenkirche, are open to visitors. The large Residenz palace complex in the city center, plus the easily-reached Baroque palaces at Nymphenburg and Oberschleissheim, show the grandeur of Munich’s royal past.

Munich’s National Theater is home to the world-class Bavarian State Opera. Food and Drink

Bavaria is known for its excellent beers. The Weissbier, or Weizenbier, is a wheat beer and a Munich specialty. Helles, a clear gold beer, is Munich’s most popular beer today. The Dunkles, a dark brown burnt malt beer, was popular in the 19th century. The heavy, malty Starkbier contains 6 to 9% alcohol. The Hofbr%C3%A4uhaus am Platzl in the city center is perhaps the most famous beer hall worldwide. There are also many typical Bavarian beer gardens within and outside the city. Every year, starting in mid-September and ending the first week of October, Munich hosts the Oktoberfest, the largest beer festival in the world.

Typical Bavarian dishes include Weisswurst (white sausage) with soft Brezeln (pretzels) and sweet mustard for breakfast. Schweinebraten, or roast pork, and Schweinshaxn (pork knuckes) are rustic lunch and dinner choices. Delicious desserts include Dampfnudeln (sweet yeast dumplings) with vanilla sauce.

Skiing

Munich is within an hour of some fantastic Alpine ski areas, including Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Spitzingsee, Lenggries-Brauneck, and Reit im Winkl / Steinplatte. All can be reached by car or train and bus connections. The Zugspitze ski area at Garmisch is a fantastic place to ski and snowboard on the huge glaciers just below the peak of the highest mountain in Germany.
