Phillip Kahn is credited with the invention of the camera phone in 1997. He had been working on a camera phone for a time before the birth of his daughter, when his wife went into labor he frantically finished the final connections between a digital camera, a cell phone, and a laptop to send photos. The first camera phones in the United States were sold by Sprint in 2004.

An invention that would have brought much acclaim years ago slips in almost unnoticed into everyday life now. A digital camera could bring about almost instantaneous transfer of photos previously if you had a digital camera handy, a computer, and an internet connection. Combining the phone and the camera has made the world immensely more visually accessible with huge social implications.

Of course, the normal birthday parties, prom photos, and new baby photos are shared instantly now. This new technology also means photos that went in the family album now go to the family list on the phone immediately. With the advent of video and larger memory cards on camera phones, baby’s first step video may be sent worldwide minutes after it happens. A video recorder and a digital camera would cost $1000 in the early 2000s, now camera phones with video are free with a 2-year service contract @ the local cell phone provider.

All effects of the new technology are not sweetness and light however. It is much easier to take photos secretly while pretending to be talking on the phone or using it to text . Camera phones are prohibited in the Pentagon, museums, theatres, and probably the local fitness club.

Conversely, camera phones sometimes make it easy to take either photos or a video of a crime being committed. This can obviously be an incredibly useful timesaving tool for law enforcement. Law enforcement has recently introduced proposed legislation that would make it illegal to take a video of an officer of the lawn performing his duties though. This is a controversial proposal to say the least.

Camera phones have made the term citizen journalist a common term. Some historical occurrences that have been previously obscured by repressive governments are now readily viewed by the world as they are happening. The camera phone is undoubtedly one of the great inventions of modern times.
