Tucson Tamales

Here in Tucson, we live on the Mexican breakfast. It is just how it is, and I have never even considered a replacement, but a few years ago, I discovered a tamale place for breakfast. Their variety is so enormous that tamales are available for every meal, and they are made in many creative ways. You can get them frozen. They have catered events for us at the job, and their tamale selection is always a hit. Guests are always surprised, and here in the southwest, people like their Mexican food pretty traditional, or at least regionally traditional. I am from Austin Texas, and I do not know if their Austin tamale offends me, but I get over it quick because they are so good. They only come frozen and that may seem off putting, but they freeze well, and they are almost as good as fresh. They are made with organic spinach, mushroom and spices, and the masa is made with a blue type of corn. I am not sure what makes them blue, but they are a hit cut up as appetizers at parties. Tucson Tamales even has chicken potpie tamales. Who does that? They are awesome. My kids order dogmales, hot dog tamales. The dog is all beef, and it has bacon, onion, tomato and pinto beans. Pintos are an interesting choice in bean, but it works well with the green chiles. Most local people come for the green Chile tamale. Green chiles are a staple around here. They come in many ways, but green chile tamales are just Tucson to me. The other tamales at Tucson Tamale are huge, but the green chile tamales are the regular tamale size. The Santa Cruz tamales are traditional too. They are made with beef cooked in mild red chiles. They are a traditional type also. They have a wide selection of salsas and salads. I was stunned to find out that they had Italian tamales. They come frozen, so I get them when I get the Austins. I usually pick up some salsa and their very fresh pico. It is that necessary component to making your frozen tamales special, like in the restaurant. They are always inviting. The owners are always there working, mingling and making sure everyone is ok.
