Often referred to as the city at the bottom of the world, Ushuaia is on the island of Tierra del Fuego on the southern tip of South America near Cape Horn, about equally divided between Argentina and Chile. Ushuaia is the closest city to the Antarctic continent, which was originally developed as a penal colony. Today Ushuaia is connected by air service to the Argentina capital of Buenos Aires, and to Santiago, Chile.

The port docks on the Beagle Channel are a popular cruise ship stop and departure point for Antartic research expeditions. A museum illustrates the history of the penal colony and British settlement. Before the Panama Canal was built, all ships going from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific navigated through the Beagle Channel. There is some logging on surrounding forests in Tierra del Fiego, plus a railway going to the popular Tierra Del Fuego national park called the train to the end of the world.
