The Constitution
The Constitution limits the central government by dividing power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Under separation of powers, each branch has its responsibilities, a system that the Founders hoped would prevent any branch from gaining too much power.
The founding fathers provided for a separation of powers by making three branches of govt. that could check and balance each other.

Separation of powers as defined in the Constitution of the United States has to do with the power the government has over the states. It also provides for states to govern themselves by the rules of the Constitution.
The concept of Separation of Powers is embodied in the Constitution in the 1st Article, in the 2nd Article, and in the 3rd Article.
