It depends on the type of plane. Smaller aircraft such as the Cessna 172 only have three tires, while much bigger models such as the Boeing 747 can have up to 18.

The common factor is the three-position arrangement : one tire (or set) at the nose, and two sets of main gear, one on the right and one on the left. Some very old aircraft had tail wheels instead, because they took off and landed with the nose up.
