Locking pliers are used mainly in aircraft maintenance, and mostly in the military. Many nuts that may be subject to loosening under vibration have small holes drilled in 3 places on the outer edge. A thin stainless steel wire is threaded through one of these holes when the nut is torqued up, and then the ends of the wire are gripped in the locking pliers and twisted till they reach an anchoring point nearby, threaded through it,and gripped and twisted again. In this way the nut can be held immobile.
