Alanine transaminase (ALT) is an enzyme found in the highest amounts in the liver. Injury to the liver results in release of the substance into the blood.
This article discusses the test to measure the amount of ALT in the blood.
Alternative NamesSGPT; Serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase; Alanine transaminase; Alanine aminotransferasa
How the test is performedBlood is typically drawn from a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand. The site is cleaned with germ-killing medicine (antiseptic). The health care provider wraps an elastic band around the upper arm to apply pressure to the area and make the vein swell with blood.
Next, the health care provider gently inserts a needle into the vein. The blood collects into an airtight vial or tube attached to the needle. The elastic band is removed from your arm.
Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed, and the puncture site is covered to stop any bleeding.
In infants or young children, a sharp tool called a lancet may be used to puncture the skin and make it bleed. The blood collects into a small glass tube called a pipette, or onto a slide or test strip. A bandage may be placed over the area if there is any bleeding.
How the test will feelWhen the needle is inserted to draw blood, some people feel moderate pain, while others feel only a prick or stinging sensation. Afterward, there may be some throbbing.
Why the test is performedThis test is used to determine if a patient has liver damage.
Normal ValuesNormal range can vary according to a number of factors, including age and gender. Normal value ranges may also vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results.
What abnormal results meanAn increase in ALT levels may be due to:
There is very little risk involved with having your blood taken. Veins and arteries vary in size from one patient to another and from one side of the body to the other. Taking blood from some people may be more difficult than from others.
Other risks associated with having blood drawn are slight but may include:
There are number codes to make tildes. The number codes are different for each letter. In Windows, you hold down Alt while you type the appropriate number code for that letter. Capital letters and lower case letters require different number codes. Capital A with a tilde is Alt + 0195 Capital N with a tilde is Alt + 0209 Capital O with a tilde is Alt + 0213 lowercase a with a tilde is Alt + 0227 lowercase n with a tilde is Alt + 0241 lowercase o with a tilde is Alt + 0245 Don't use the numbers along the top row of your keyboard. Use the numeral keypad on the side of your keyboard. Turn Num Lock ON. There is a different way to do this in Mac, and yet another way to do it in HTML.
The way you make a little 2 is by: Holding the alt gear on the left hand side of the keyboard and press del at the same time... holding it and pressing the numbers 2, 5, and 3 you should get "²" If you want to get a little 2 on a Microsoft website... Hold the alt gear and press the numbers 0, 1, 7, 8 and there you have it!!! "²"
Not sure how to type the Alt code, but you can copy/paste it from here or from various websites which list them. A couple of related links are below. Here you can copy it: ≈
Utilize the Character Map that's located in "System Tools" in the "Accessories" folder in Windows. There you can find number, symbols, etc. that you can insert to your document by copying and pasting or using the Alt key along with the number code.
In this order. Alt+71 Alt+69 Alt+84 Alt+95 Alt+65 Alt+95 Alt+76 Alt+73 Alt+70 Alt+69.
