I don't believe that the shifters had any recalls. My daughter's Ford Explorer XLT has 150,000 miles on it. She was complaining of the shifter being sloppy and often not going completely into PARK. She could start it by putting it into NEUTRAL though. I replaced the Neutral safety switch and then realized that there was a gold cad plated bolt with a torx head sitting on the floor mat. Sure enough this bolt had backed out of the bracket which holds the shifter lever in place. I pulled the lower part of the dash off below the steering wheel and the metal plate behind it, once I saw where the bolt went I put it back in snug and tight. Then adjusted the lever below on the transmission (black plastic/white plastic clip). Everything is back nice and tight and it shifts positive and tight. Please give this some thought before you go looking at a new shifter cable or neutral safety switch like I did.

Why my ford explorer 2004 don't shift from park?

If your 2004 Ford Explorer won't shift out of park, it could be due to a faulty brake light switch, which prevents the shift interlock system from engaging. Another possibility is a problem with the gear shifter itself or the transmission linkage. Additionally, if the ignition system isn't functioning properly, it may also affect shifting. Checking these components should help identify the issue.
