12qts with the torque converter drained. It will be far less if you have just removed the pan and filter.
The transmission on your 1996 Ford E150 conversion van may shutter and stutter due to several issues, such as low transmission fluid levels, which can lead to inadequate lubrication and overheating. Worn or damaged transmission components, like the clutch or torque converter, can also cause these symptoms. Additionally, a failing or dirty transmission filter may restrict fluid flow, exacerbating the problem. It's advisable to have a mechanic diagnose the issue to prevent further damage.

For a 1990 Ford E-150 Econoline van, the recommended type of automatic transmission fluid is Mercon. It's important to use the correct fluid to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the transmission. Always check the owner's manual or consult with a professional to confirm specifications, especially if the vehicle has undergone modifications.
Auto transmission problems may be caused by a number of issues including wrongly poorly installed parts. The best thing to do is seek help from your local mechanic.

Open the hood, look right in the middle just above the engine, then look to the left about 1 foot. There should be a tube there with a grip that looks like a big ring at the end facing you. Pull that ring and the dipstick comes out. NOTE: You do this with the engine running and the transmission in park while the parking brake is set for safety. There is a guide on the dipstick to show you what the level is of the fluid.
Corrosion? Contaminated brake fluid?
