You can purchase an adapter (OTC 6604) and fluid pump (Plews 55001) from Amazon that gives you the necessary tools to fill or top off the automatic Transmission Fluid on that Explorer. It's really quite easy and would be considerly cheaper than trying to add a dipstick. Vehicle needs to be lifted safely, supported, level and transmission brought up to operating temparature. With engine running remove small plug from bottom of transmission pan and install the adapter. Keep a drain pan under the plug to catch any fluid. If fluid is just dripping out the transmission is full. If fluid is running out allow fluid to drain until it just drips out. If no fluid comes out pump some fluid up into the adapter and remove the pump occasionally to determine when the fluid is just dripping out. Remove the adapter when satisfied with level of fluid and install fill plug, done.

You wouldn't want to do that because starting with the 2002 model Ford Explorer ( four door ) there is no automatic transmission fluid dipstick / dipstick tube that would allow you to put in automatic transmission fluid at home
Through the automatic transmission fluid dipstick tube , at the back of your engine , slightly to the left ( looking from the front of the Explorer ) by the firewall
Down the dipstick tube.Down the dipstick tube.
In the transmission dipstick tube , on the passenger side of the engine , near the firewall , with a funnel
Use a funnel small enough to fit into th dipstick tube and add as needed.
You fill a tranny through the dipstick tube. You will need to buy a small funnel.
