Yes! After only 87,000km and at least 12 oil changes my engine quit on me. I had the car towed to the local GM dealer, only to find out a few days later that the engine had sludge in both the upper and lower engine. I was also advised that GM would not warranty the engine because of the sludge. I bought this car thinking it would be much better than the usual GM product, because of the Toyota engine...but was I wrong! I am presently compliling several complaints from Toyota and Pontiac owners about this problem. It seems that Toyota have have had engine design flaws that contributed to the sludge problem (engine running to hot, oil filter positionning, etc..). I have most of my maintenance records and still GM does not want to cover the motor on warranty. If you have any other information about this problem, could you forward the info?

--------

I had the valve cover off mine at 100K miles, definitely no sludge problem in there. Also, among the Vibers at forums.genvibe.com, there have not been any reported sludge problems

Has anyone ever heard of a 2001 Highlander's engine blowing at 70000 miles with no warning The oil pump broke but the oil resovoir was full.?

This engine is known for having a sludge problem. Toyota extended the warranty for 7 years (total). I don't know if this caused your problem but you may want to look into reimbursement from Toyota if sludge was the cause.

What is the best product to flush engine sludge from an engine?

Flushing sludge from your engine is not a very smart thing to do. Almost every automotive technician will agree with that. Flushing out an engine causes all the sludge to drain down into the oil pan. Which in turn tends to plug up the oil pick up and causes engine damage.

Engine smoke on your rav4 first start?

You don't mention what year it is. But i can tell you if it is between the years 1999 - 2003 you better do a search on Oil Sludge on Toyota's. You might be in store for a major engine failure. There was a class action suite on this and those years mentioned above had that symptom and the engine needed to be replaced. I am saying this because my 03 Rav4 had the oil light come on and then the check engine light. when i took it to the dealer, he said that there was sludge in the oil and that caused the lubrication not to be up to where it was supposed to be. With only 70,000 miles on it too! Their repair estimate was $6,061 for a used engine. And no, i have a good maint. record on the vehicle. A call to the dealer and to Toyota says there is nothing that is under any warranty to cover this. SO be careful.

Reason for sludge formation in diesel engine?

Engine sludge formation includes, lack of proper maintenance, inappropriate oil temperature, use of an inferior engine oil, and engine oil contamination. You can try flushing it out with an oil flush additive but often times this does more harm than good.

Does the v6 passt have engine sludge?

While a V6 Passat can sludge (as can any engine), it is not nearly as common as sludge issues on the turbocharged 1.8 liter engines. The reason for the difference is that the heat from the turbo, combined with an inadequate oil capacity (under 4 liters) breaks down the oil and forms sludge. The V6 engine, being a non turbo and having a larger oil capacity is less prone to sludge. However, as is the case with any engine, prolonged oil change intervals and cheap oil/filters will increase the risk of sludgeing over time.
