Many auto parts stores will do this for you. If you would rather, just disconnect the negative battery cable, wait for five minutes, and reconnect it. That will reset nearly everything. My question is "Why did the light come on in the first place?" Ignoring the light could, at the least, cost you at the gas pump, and at the worst, leave you with more costly repairs in the future.

Can a brake problem cause the service engine light to come on?

What model do you have? I am saying no to your question. In most vehicles the service engine light deals with the operation of the "engine", igniton system, exhaust, and fuel system. If there is a problem with the brakes you could see an ABS light (if equiped) or a BRAKE! light on. If the Service engine soon light is on in your vehicle the problem lies in one of those systems. Good Luck
