The ignition switch in a 1981 Toyota pickup truck typically consists of several key components: the ignition lock cylinder, electrical contacts, and a wiring harness. The ignition lock cylinder is engaged by the key, allowing for different positions such as Off, On, and Start. Diagrams often illustrate the connection points for various wires, indicating how power flows through the system to activate different components.

I just today, 11/25/2005, changed an ignition switch on a 1981 Ford F150 that has only 63,000 miles. It took less than 2 minutes. Under the ignition switch there is a small 1/8" hole that has a pin in it. It is spring loaded. Turn the ignition almost to the start position and depress the pin into the column. Pull the ignition switch straight out. Look down into the cavity where the switch came out and notice the 3/32" channel that is in the 2:00 position on the cavity. Make sure to line up the new switch so that the square male channel slids into the female walls inside the column. Just slide the new switch in fully and it will snap into place when the spring loaded pin hits the sweet spot. No problems with the starting of the engine and you are ready to go.
