There are 2 bolts holding it in place. Its on the side of the engine bay, above the throttle body. Drain the antifreeze first so it doesnt get everywhere (even though it still will). When you replace make sure the thermostat is positioned the same way (there should be a hole positioned at the top)
To install a thermostat on a 2008 Dodge Avenger with a 2.7L engine, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Drain the coolant and remove the upper radiator hose connected to the thermostat housing. Unbolt the thermostat housing, replace the old thermostat with the new one, ensuring the new gasket is in place, and then reassemble everything in reverse order. Finally, refill the coolant, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks.

replace it. when they go bad you can't fix them.
The dealership would be a good place to start.
What ball bearing are you referring to?
Changing a thermostat on a 2008 Dodge Avenger can be difficult because there area two thermostats. One is located under the intake manifold inside a housing unit, and the second is at the end of the radiator hose.
If you follow the bottom hose on your radiator it will lead you to it. You will have to remove 3 bolts on the thermostat housing to get to it but it should only take you about 20 minutes to change it out.
under the housing where the lower radiator hose hooks to the engine
Dodge Avenger was created in 1995.
