Your water pump should run off of the serpentine belt. there shouldn't be a separate belt for the 4 cylinder. if you change the serpentine belt, there is a belt tentioner in the middle. using a wrench, not a ratchet(the ratchet will not have enough room to fully turn the tentioner), turn all the way to the right, remove the worn belt and replace it with a new one, following the belt diagram on the inside of the passengers side fender.
Drain the water from your 1989 Chevy Cavalier cooling system. Remove the water return hose from the water pump. Remove the water pump belt. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new water pump.

On the drivers side (Australia)/ passenger side (America) at the back on the bottom of the engine. The main belt it connected to it.
Drain the radiator on the 1988 Cavalier. Take of the water pump belt. If the fan and shroud are in the way then remove them. unbolt and remove the pump. Bolt up the new pump and put the belt back on. Put the shroud and fan on if they were removed. Fill the radiator back up.
If this is a 4cylinder motor, the water pump is located in with the timing belt,and should be replaced by a qualified mechanic, this is a interference motor, if timing belt is not properly installed, motor damage will result. Bent valves, holes in pistons,etc.
