To remove the heat shield on a Chevy Cavalier, first ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is cool. Use a socket wrench to remove any bolts or nuts securing the heat shield to the exhaust system or the vehicle chassis. If the shield is held in place by clips, gently pry them off with a flathead screwdriver. Once all fasteners are removed, carefully lift the heat shield away from the vehicle.

The factory puts the shield there for a reason.
Muffler Heat Sheild
The heat shield on a 2005 Sunfire can be removed by taking out the retaining bolts. The gas tank can then be lowered from the vehicle.
You can do it if you remove the heat shield it works.
Remove the air inlet duct tube. Remove the heat shield from the exhaust and move it out of the way. Unbolt the crossover exhaust pipe bolts from the from the front exhaust pipes move it out of the way. Unbolt the thermostat housing pipe and remove the thermostat. Installation is reverse.

try looking at your resistor pack on the passsenger side lower the blower motor down and there is a heat coil and resistor in there
