The 1998 - 2009 models have 2 plastic clips attached to the top rear portion of the ashtray that must be slightly pulled down about 1/4" to clear it from catching on the compartment slot. Once this is done the ashtray can be pulled out for removal and to reinstall it the 2 plastic clips must again be depressed and the ashtray can then be pushed into the slot.
