you need a small flat blade screwdriver. use your shoulder to prop the bonnet whilst you flick the metal clips on either end of the strut. or you could just use a long broom to prop the bonnet. the struts should pop off the ball. the new ones should just click on. done. note: the bonnet will be pretty heavy.
The bonnet release cable breaking is a common problem in the Ford BA Falcon, and if done incorrectly removing or replacing it can result in having to replace the fuse block as well. It is best to have this done by a qualified mechanic.
In the fuse box, above the bonnet release.
if you open the bonnet, look directly down at the catch for the bonnet. it's just on the passenger side of that, next to the headlight.

1996 Explorers do not have front struts. They use torsion bars as springs that require special tools to remove and conventional shock absorbers that are easy to remove.
My Ford Connect bonnet is opened by the main ignition key. There is a sliding plastic cover at the front center below the grill. Insert key and turn to the right, bonnet will click to safe open. Turn key again and at the same time lift bonnet. Remember to remove the key.
