Has happened to me THREE TIMES! One time, It was when the car was on and I couldn't turn it off. Chevy knows this is a flaw and they will usually change it for free<- Also there is a plunger inside the steering housing. There should be a square shaped plastic cover under the steering wheel, pry it off with a screw driver and then find with yoiur finger a plastic or rubber cylinder, pull this back and turn the key. It should come right out.
Mine blew apart inside and they had to cut the head of the key off and put in a whole new unit and reprogram the keys, it would have been over 200.00 bucks but was covered under warranty, they claim it won't happen again and is not the same design....I have my GM doubts.....It was great to have the car running on the tow truck and at the dealer which was closed on a Sat. or Sun. afternoon.....

In my case it was the ignition switch itself had overheated and seized up. Replace the switch (have to lower the column, disconnect the wiring plug from the switch, and remove/replace the switch.) Clean all connections to the switch, make sure they're connected solidly and not heating up again.

If this is not done, you will need to reprogram the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) after replacing the ignition switch. Next you will need to remove the radio from the dash (you will remove the cylinder through the radio opening). Next, you will need to remove the beauty ring around the keyhole on the dash. Behind this there are 2 bolts. Once you remove the 2 bolts, you will be able to pull it through the backside of the dash and disconnect the 2 plugs and the anti-theft sensor. IF for some reason you are not able to remove the switch in the off position (if its stuck in the on position like mine was), you will need to reprogram the PCM after replacing the ignition switch or it won't start. You can get the steps to do that for your vehicle from your local GM dealer.
