the tumblers in your key switch are failing replace them before long
The ignition switch on a 1996 Mercury Tracer might lock up and release only when the shifter is removed from park and then put in the park position again because the sensor is getting worn. This sensor lets the ignition know that the car is in park and it is safe to remove the key. Check the shift position sensor.
I have a 2006 and I get about 10-12 MPG.
You haven't really given enough information, but a possible cause might be that the starter is not fully engaging the flywheel when it is starting the engine.
First, see if the each coil is getting the required voltage from the ignition switch (probably 12V). If they are, you can check the resistance of the coil with a simple volt meter. Should read minimal resistance. If the meter reads OL then the coil windings are open (defective/bad).
I'm wondering if a locksmith is capable of getting your ignition lock cylinder to rotate to the on/run position so the ignition lock cylinder release can be depressed to remove it ? I'm also wonderering what they would charge for that service, because I was charged $30.00 and taxes to open my door lock on my house.
I would suspect that if it is getting fuel and not starting it would be that it is not getting any spark. If you find that it is not getting spark you could check: Ignition module Crank position sensor Engine control module Associated wiring and connectors
Remove upper and lower covers. The top is tricky because the ears of the ignition keep the top cover from being removed. I take a razor blade and cut the plastic all the way through directly in the middle below the ears of the ignition. Be aware of hidden screws when removing the covers. The screws are small inverted torx. After getting the top cover off. With key in On position. Look for hole with depress pin in it. Press retainer with pick or similar and pull tumbler straight out.
Perform the following steps in order. 1. Turn on ignition without starting and wait 7 secs then turn to acc position and wait 4 secs. 2. Turn on ignition without starting and wait 7 secs then turn to acc position and wait 4 secs. 3. Turn on ignition without starting and wait 7 secs then turn to acc position and wait 4 secs. 4.Turn on ignition without starting and wait 7 secs then turn to acc position and wait 3 secs. 5. Turn on ignition without starting and wait 7 secs then turn to acc position and wait 2 secs. 6. Start car and wait 3 secs then turn off wait 3 secs and start car. Took me 2 tries as I was not getting the timing right...but it worked.
You have a wire that is loose and arcing.
drivers side mid way back next to the support rail. Its rough getting to. I didn't find it rough it's about a 3 minute job. The fuel filter is under the rear drivers door near the frame rail. There is a black plastic cover over the gas tank with an access door near the frame rail pull the door towards the frame rail it will pop off then it's two clips on the filter to change.
Spark plugs are used to ignite the air / fuel mixture in the engine The ( 8 ) spark plugs ( in your navigator ) are needed for the engine to run properly For example : if the engine cranks but does not start the engine is either not getting fuel , SPARK , or air Another example is if an engine cylinder is " missing " so the engine is running rough the cause may be the SPARKPLUG , coil , not the correct air / fuel ratio etc.
...could be allot of reasons why you may not be getting spark, here are some: # no power to ignition coil. faulty ignition. # faulty distributer cap, rotor. # faulty ignition module. # check for start signal from ecm. ...and there is a few more.
