What about the timming
get a set of new plug wires for it that are pre-cut for the car and then replace 1 wire at a time.
The cam shaft position sensor is located under the distributor cap. You can replace this easily by undoing the screws holding on the distributor cap, remove and replace the sensor, then just replace the distributor cap.
undo the hold down screws and pull off, replace the rotor and install the new cap and then transfer plug wires one at a time to the proper location on the new cap.

According to about.com it doesn't have a distributor , it has 3 coil packs
there is no distributor on a 98 rav. therefore no cap or rotor. replace the plugs and wires and the tuneup is done

Remove wires from old distributor and put on new one [one at a time, noting locations on distributor, or marking wires and locations]. Remove rotor [noting direction it is pointing] and replace with new one pointing in same direction].
