To change the distributor cap and rotor on a 1997 Chevy pickup, first, disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety. Remove the screws or clips holding the distributor cap in place and carefully lift it off, noting the wire connections for reassembly. Next, take out the rotor from the top of the distributor by unscrewing or lifting it off, then replace it with the new rotor. Finally, install the new distributor cap, reconnect the wires as they were, and reattach the battery terminal.

What about the timming
There is two screews that hold the cap on ,remove them. Then just pull the rotor up and off. It will only go on 1 way. Transfur wires to new cap while keeping them in order.
