I've never done this on a Chevy Lumina, but I'm pretty sure it's figurable if you've done it in another vehicle. You'll have to remove the steering column assembly (it's a bitch) and you'll find what looks to be fishing wire hooked to a little metal piece if it's not already broken off, shift and look what's moving it and it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
Buy the Cable , then remove the screws that hold the broken cable and attach the new cable back.
The shift cable on an 01 Chevy Cavalier is replaced by removing the retaining screws, removing the cable from the shifter, and pulling it from the vehicle. A new cable can then be locked into place and bolted down.

To replace an MTB shift cable, follow these steps: Shift to the smallest gear in the rear and front. Loosen the cable anchor bolt and remove the cable. Thread the new cable through the housing and attach it to the derailleur. Pull the cable taut and secure it with the anchor bolt. Test the shifting to ensure it is working properly.
