To replace the gear shift linkage in a 1997 Ford Ranger, first, disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Then, locate the shift linkage under the vehicle, typically connected to the transmission and the shifter mechanism. Remove any retaining clips or bolts holding the linkage in place, and carefully detach it. Install the new linkage by reversing the removal steps, ensuring all connections are secure before reconnecting the battery and testing the shifter.
