How to fix the temperature control knob on a 1996 or newer Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

Without a whole lot of information to work with...

2 ways I can envision a temperature control might need fixing:

It has physically failed - no longer sending the electrical signal to the actuator motor to adjust the position of the temperature blend door.
It is being blamed for not being able to adjust the heater temperature.

Since the heating/cooling controls are part of the integrated dash panel, that is going to have to come off. Not hard and best done with the $4 Ford radio removal tools (Walmart, Target, any auto parts store)

Likely to be just like the blower switch and held on by only 1 screw and having 1 wire connector.

On the other hand, if the true problem is the temperature is not being adjusted when moving the switch, that would be:

the temperature blend door itself
or more likely to be the actuator motor.
