The trunk lid on my '96 is a little finicky too. Sometimes it will close with just one push. Other times, it will take a couple of tries. Also, it doesn't always open when I hit the remote button.
I've noticed that there are two little rubber "feet" on the trunk lid. These are adjustable. My guess is that they keep the trunk lid level and at the right height from the car body. My car is missing one. One of these days, I'll get to the junk yard and find another one. However, messing around with the adjustment on the foot that IS there has helped the problem.
You might also check the lubrication on the latch too. I generally just hit it with WD-40, but some light grease might be a bit better and longer lived.
Hope this helps!

I had the same problem with my 2005 Sunfire. It happened right after my sis in law put her suitcase in the trunk. We thought it was the suitcase at first, but after we took it out it still wouldn't close. We messed with the latch and tried closing it from inside and everything for two days. Finally my step dad thought to hook a chain to the round thing the latch hooks onto and to pull up. It worked. We believe what happened is the weight of the suitcase forced that down to where the latch couldn't reach it to properly hook on. And even though it was still up and looked fine, even half an inch can make a huge difference. Occasionally my trunk wont close and I'll have to pull up on the loop again. I keep a high heel shoe in the trunk and slip it in the hole for leverage. Works well.
The trunk light switch on a Pontiac Sun Fire is typically in the latch assembly. This is usually inside the trunk and under the carpet.
in the trunk or under your back seat
One that fits.......
you go to the dealership
it seem to be the trunk plastic is broke and I have brought the the part and wont to fix it
beside the drivers seat...on the floor
There's a black cord inside the trunk on the top left.
Bad trunk lid gasket. The gasket may have come loose or got cut.
You must first remove the trunk door facia. (This is the part with the "Pontiac" lights in it.) Then you can get to the bulb to replace it.
On a 98 Pontiac Sunfire, the red color of wire goes on the terminal marked "B" on the starter. This terminal is located close to the battery of the vehicle.
look up under the back window through the trunk and you will see them right there.
it "should" be to the right side and bellow steering wheel .if it is equipped with one.maybe check at trunk latch first to determine the car has this"option" In my 2001 Sunfire, it is on the left side bellow the steering wheel.
