I don't know if this will help, but it may. I was hours into a long trip when my 95 New Yorker suddenly downshifted on the highway. Lucky no one was behind me. I had no sooner pulled over to the shoulder than someone pulled over to assist. He was an Auto Zone employee and told me that my problem was likely a sensor. His recommendation was to disconnect the battery for a few minutes (2-5) and the computer would reset itself. I did that and I was on my way. No problems since, and it's been less than 2 weeks.
Before my return, I put it in the shop to have it checked out. The mechanic said that unless the "check engine" light came on, there would be no trouble code they could get off the computer. When that happened, the check engine light didn't come on, neither did the "overdrive" light. I have no idea what happened and my mechanic said he just drive it.
If you have a check engine light on, you might go to Auto Zone if you live near one. They'll hook your car up to the diagnostic computer for little or no charge so that you can see what trouble code is showing.

The issue with your 1992 Chrysler New Yorker jumping out of gear and downshifting could be due to a few factors, such as low transmission fluid levels, a faulty transmission control module, or worn-out internal components. Overheating or electrical problems can also contribute to this behavior. Stopping the engine may reset the system temporarily, allowing it to function normally for a while. It's advisable to have the transmission checked by a professional to diagnose and address the underlying issue.
In a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker, the shift sensor, also known as the transmission range sensor, is typically located on the transmission itself. It is mounted on the side of the transmission case and is responsible for detecting the position of the gear shift lever. Accessing it may require removing the air intake components or other nearby parts for better visibility and reach. Always consult a service manual for detailed instructions and safety precautions.
You need to have the computer checked for codes. That will tell you what area the problem is in. It can be wiring, computer, or even an issue with the new transmission.
