Yes, a disconnected or broken TACH wire from the HEI distributor cap can cause a '79 trans to fail to start.
Since the coil is in the distributor, simply hook the tach 'trigger' wire to the out put on the side of the distributor cap marked 'tach'.
look on the distributor cap, there is a slot marked "tach", connect the hot wire there and ground the other wire
u have to look at ur distributor if it is an HEI "coil on top there is markings on the distributor cap for the tach but if it is a regular distributor with an external coil you hook it up to the neg wire off the coil neg/ black wire
there will be a spot on back of distributor cap it will say tach run wire from there to gauge. You probably need to run a switched 12v lead as well to illuminate the tach at night. The tach slot on the distributor will take care of 'timing' the pulse to the tach. Often times the tach will have a switch setting for 4-6-8 cylinder. Read the manufacturer instructions carefully.
if it is a hei ignition there is a place on the distributor cap that says tach.
On the distributor cap there is an extension that juts out toward the driver side. underneath this are two wire terminals. they should be marked on the top of the cap "Tach" and "Batt." A wire with a male spade end crimped onto it fits into the "tach" terminal and provides a signal for your tachometer to use.
On the dist., cap, where the wires go in, there is a tab labeled TACH.

On the distributor cap where the wiring hooks up is a terminal that says tach. Install the red wire to it and the black or ground wire to a suitable ground. Sometimes the tach has a green wire that connects to the white one coming from the ignition coil plug side that has 2 wires
tach signal wire is a blue wire with a black cap that ends on the top of the strut tower near the firewall...done
