A rear clicking noise when the defrost heat is turned on in a vehicle typically indicates a problem with the HVAC system. This noise may be caused by a malfunctioning blend door actuator, which controls airflow between the heater and air conditioning. Additionally, debris or foreign objects lodged in the ductwork could also produce clicking sounds. It's advisable to have the system inspected by a professional to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Apparently it is the rear air "blender" ( whatever that is(?)) My 2003 Explorer was making the loud clicking sound from the rear driver side above the rear left wheel. I lived with it for a month before I just found the answer on the net. I turned off the rear fan control (from the front controls) and the clicking has stopped. I guess there is no more air from the rear now but the clicking has stopped- Car is long been paid off and I'm happy again.
If it is in the rear end you need to change the third member oil.

To repair the rear defrost in a 1999 Continental, first check the fuse related to the rear defrost system; if it's blown, replace it. Next, inspect the defrost switch for functionality and ensure the wiring and connectors are intact and free from corrosion. If the defrost grid on the rear window is damaged, you may need a rear defroster repair kit to fix any broken lines. If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider consulting a professional mechanic for further diagnosis.
