The shift pattern for the transfer case on a 1989 Jeep Wrangler typically includes options for 2WD, 4WD High (4H), and 4WD Low (4L). The transfer case lever is usually shifted from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is in motion at low speeds, and 4L is engaged when the vehicle is stopped or moving very slowly. The exact configuration may vary slightly based on whether the Wrangler is equipped with the NP231 or NP205 transfer case. Always refer to the owner's manual for specific instructions and recommendations.
The Second Shift was created in 1989.
If the shift lever on the floor won't move to engage there is most likely a linkage problem. If the linkage seems to move and you shift the lever under the dash from 2wd to 4wd and the transfer case does not engage look for a vacuum problem. the lines can be very brittle and break easily. There is a vacuum motor on the transfer case that must work in order to engage the 4wd. if all of these seem to work then the problem is likely to be internal.

Many things are inputed to tell the tranny to shift. The Solonoid pack executes the shift, and the transmission control module tells it when to shift. A good resouce is www.allpar.com.
The flasher for the 1989 Honda accord is located above the steering column. To activate it shift it to the right.
