Will a 304 engine fit in a 1998 TJ jeep wrangler?
115 h.p. & 220 ft/lbs of torque. Emissions controls in 1977 had choked this engine from it's original 150 h.p. in 1972 to a pitiful 115 by 1977.
My 1977 CJ5 with a 304 has power steering.

Not from the AMC factory... the stock Jeep V8 option was the 304.
Yes
The 1977 Jeep CJ-7 was typically equipped with the TorqueFlite 999 automatic transmission. This three-speed transmission was known for its durability and was commonly paired with the AMC 304 V8 or the 258 inline-six engines. The TorqueFlite 999 allowed for smoother shifting and improved off-road performance, making it a popular choice among Jeep enthusiasts.
