After I did this on my 92 Tempo, it ran like new! There is a O-ring seal that you have to be careful not to damage. When you tighten the cover back down, just snug it up good - don't over-tighten it. The Air Flow Sensor lets the engine know how much air is coming in so it can increase the amount of fuel that is being sprayed into the throttle body. I am not sure what you mean by the RPM's going crazy? Is it like the engine surges? You could also possibly have a vacuum leak somewhere.
