You should try to eat 5 a day and maintain a healthily, balanced diet so that you don't over do fats etc. This means that not only will you feel more mentally prepared for a race, as healthy food makes you happy (apparently), but you will also be healthier and therefore able to under go the pressure of the race more easily.
Before the race it is always good to eat something that gives you energy such as Pasta (slow release) or an energy bar/chocolate bar or something like that as it will give you energy quickly for the race. However the quick release energy can have side effects such as making you feel very tired after the race.
