To change the alternator in a Chevrolet Lumina, you will typically need a socket set, including a ratchet and various-sized sockets, especially a 10mm and 13mm socket for the bolts. Additionally, a wrench set may be helpful for accessing tight spaces, and a belt tensioner tool can assist with loosening the serpentine belt. It's also advisable to have a multimeter to test the new alternator's output once installed.

How do you replace an alternator on a 1991 Chevy Lumina?

If it is just like a 1990 Lumina with a 3.1 engine, the alternator sits on top toward the back... There are 3 bolts that hold it on the bracket... DO NOT be fooled... 2 are simple to remove... the 3rd is underneath toward the back... nearly impossible... The simplest way to change it (after taking the belt off of course) is to take the bracket off off the engine... 3 or 4 bolts... Then remove the alternator from the bracket... You will need to remove the hot wire held to the alternator, but be sure to 1st remove the negative wire from the battery or you could shock the @#$% out out of yourself... Hope this helps...
