yes
You first remove the engine. Next, jack up the car and put it on stands. You've got to drain the transmission, remove the axles, front transmission mount, backup light wire, ground wire and shift linkage from the transmission. Lower the car to the ground and put a transmission jack under it. There are two bolts holding the back of the transmission to the car. Remove them, and the transmission will come out.
suspend the car from the frame (UNDER THE CABIN ) HAVE THE AXLES FREE . REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER COVER AND THERE IT COMES THE OIL PAN
The car has only one transaxle, AKA transmission, then no, you cannot remove the tranny without removing the tranny. If you mean without removing CV Axle or drive axle or Axle shaft or CV shaft (same thing) then the answer is still no. You cannot remove the transaxle without removing the drive axle/CV shaft.
With great difficulty. After unhooking the battery and removing the engine, remove first the fill plug then the drain plug and drain the oil into a container for recycling. (Take the fill plug out first to be sure you can; draining the transmission if you can't put new oil in it is a Big, Big Problem.) Next, jack up the back of the car and put it on jackstands. Then remove both CV axles (don't try just unhooking the axles from the transmission end, get 'em completely out of there - and this is a great time to repack them while you're here), the backup light wires, the shift linkage and clutch cable. Next, put a transmission jack under the transmission. Undo all the bolts holding it in, and lower the transmission away from the car.
dissconnect battery. jack front of car up, drain transmission of fluid. take tires off, unbolt the spindle from upper control arm, unbolt the 32mm axle nut and pull it all the way out, remove axles (might need pry bar) and half shaft. remove starter. support bottom of transmission with jack and wood. remove bolts from transmission (should be 5) remove transmission. reverse for installation
The short story: remove shift linkage. Remove axles. Remove transmission (engine stays in car). replace clutch. You must have a manual to do this job, or it will not work. Even mechanics who do this job will work from a book.
There are two ways to do it: Removing the engine/transmission unit and do the replacement on the bench, or from under the car removing the transmission. For the later, there's a good step by step pictorial guide: http://www.miata.net/garage/clutch2.html
disconnect the battery, and remove the starter. remove the front wheels and drive axles. disconnect any trans. cooler lines, sensor wires, shift linkage, trans. dip stick, or anything bolted to the transmission. find support for the motor, and for the transmission. disconnect any transmission mounts. remove bellhousing bolts, and drop transmission out of car, be careful of any wires lines or brackets you may have forgotten or over looked.
Long process broken down: You will need: Large tool kit Pickle fork (ball joint separator) and three-pound sledgehammer Jackstands Transmission jack Clutch kit Bottle of hydraulic fluid, just in case Enough Honda MTL to refill the transmission You should have: Help Steps: 1. Unhook battery, jack up car and remove front wheels. Drain the transmission. 2. Separate brake rotors from CV axles, then take axles out. Disconnect the clutch cylinder from the transmission. 3. Disconnect everything that will keep you from removing the transmission, and do that now. 4. Unbolt the old clutch and bolt in the new. 5. Put car back together. This will take you all weekend.
You really need the manual for this--there are a LOT of things you must disconnect--but here's the basics: 1. Jack the front of the car up, unhook and remove the battery (you need the space) and remove the front tires. 2. Undo the front suspension, then the drive axles. 3. Drain the transmission. 4. Remove the starter. 5. Remove everything else that's connected to the transmission. 6. Run a transmission jack up to the transmission case. 7. Unbolt the old transmission, slide it away from the engine and lower it. 8. Put new transmission where old one was. 9. Connect everything to the transmission you disconnected. 10. Fill the transmission. 11. Put the front suspension back together, reinstall the transmission and take the car for a test drive.
To replace the clutch in a 1998 Dodge Neon SOHC, first, lift the car and remove the front wheels and transaxle. Then, disconnect the battery, drain the transmission fluid, and remove the transmission by detaching the mounts, axles, and linkage. Once the transmission is out, remove the old clutch assembly, clean the flywheel, and install the new clutch and pressure plate. Finally, reassemble the components in reverse order, ensuring everything is properly torqued and connected before lowering the car and testing the clutch.
4-wheeled cars have 4 axles. Depending on the type of drive-train that the car uses, some of the axles might only be stub axles or hubs, and some axles might be referred to as 'spindles', but they are all, 'axles', nonetheless.
