The fuel filter is on the fire wall on the divers side of the engine compartment. It it under the reservoir for the master cylinder. It is held in place my a metal clip. NOTE: may have fallen out of the holder, and be laying against the fire wall. My 97 has standard hose clamps, so no special tools are needed.

The fuel pump is in the tank, and the tank must be removed to access it.
According to the 1997 Mercury Villager Owner Guide ( and one of the Ford websites ) The 3.0 liter V6 engine takes the ( Motorcraft FL-839 ) engine oil filter
There is no such device on a '97 villager.
It's NOT a 1-person job! You have to drain and drop the fuel tank. The filter is inside the fuel tank. Not a job for the untrained.
A 97 Mercury Villager should use r134a type freon. The valve size is designed so that the r12 fittings cant accidentally be used.
Go to a Ford dealer.
On a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer : I assume the fuel filter would be in the same location as a 1997 Ford Explorer : ( underneath the Mountaineer , below the drivers door , mounted on the frame rail )
