pull up the center console top. You'll find your CD player, CD storage holder, coin holder, and by pulling up on your coin holder-gives you access to the kleenex box.

This sounds like the same trouble I have with my 1998 Mountaineer. See my answer under related questions. My friendly Ford - Lincoln - Mercury Dealer wanted almost $400.00 now the CD player is dead too.
The 2001 Mercury Sable does come with a CD player. If the car does not have a CD player in it, an install kit can be purchased to install a CD player.
The CD player was an option at the time of purchase - which means that many 1997 Mercury Sables do not have CD players.
In a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer : The 6 disc C/D changer should be in the center console ( if not look under the drivers seat )
The CD changer is in the center console of a 2000 Mercury Villager
To remove the rear CD player from a Mercury Mountaineer, first, disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety. Then, carefully pry off the plastic trim panel surrounding the CD player using a trim removal tool. Once the panel is off, unscrew the mounting screws that hold the CD player in place, disconnect the wiring harness, and gently pull the unit out. Reassemble in reverse order after replacing or servicing the CD player.
where is the cd changer in a 97 nissan quest

It's because your car is a whack car. Your best choice would be to lose the piece of junk!!

According to the 1999 Mercury Cougar Owner Guide the six disc CD changer ( if equipped ) is located in the luggage compartment
