it on the steering column. originally a rod from shifter connected to column and moved it like the automatic and made connection to light backup lamps. Hurst sells a switch that connects to the shifter operated by reverse rod and connects to originall wires under dash (Green and Pink I think) if you tap onto them your lights should work fine.

The switch for the backup light switch for an automatic transmission is located on the transmission where the shifting cable enters the transmission (The side of the transmission closest to the radiator),how about for the manual trans mission models?
Check the steering column. There is a switch mounted to the column that controls the backup lights and the neutral safety switch.

You didn't state weather it was an Automatic or Manual transmission. Well any way they are both on the transmission. Manual transmission has a separate switch for the backup lights the automatic is built into the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Automatic switch is about $50.00. Manual switch is about $10.00. Hope you have a manual it is a lot cheaper.
