The part that makes it so expensive is the intake manifold has to be removed to replace the thermostat and its a labor intensive job. but the intake gaskets do go bad often so it will prevent a future repair

AnswerI don't know if this will help or not but I have have a 2001 Aztec and its a pain in the butt mine is located drivers side along the side of the engine I had to bring mine in the shop to get replaced and it wasnt cheap sure the part was that's only $10.00 or so its the labor that's gonna kill you same with the air filter that took me 1hr. to remove and replace it
