I had this happen to my 00 focus. Turns out there was a wire off inside the alternator witch was an easy 60$ fix for my mechanic......Going good for 2 yrs since.
You could also have lost the ground from the battery to the body of the car, this is in addition to the motor ground, due to the rubber motor mounts isolating the main ground (negative).
