SOunds like it is misfiring and not burning all of it. First check ignition, fuel pressure, if ok, check compression all cylinders.
A catalytic converter can be ruined by a engine that is missing and dumping raw fuel into the converter.
Either the converter is partially clogged and needs replacing or you have a miss in the engine which is dumping raw fuel into the converter where it is being burned.
It is clogged and needs replacing or your engine is running very rich and is dumping unburnt fuel into the converter where it is being burnt.
Look that is plausable but the real answer is that the engine is dumping raw fuel into the converter (catalytic converter) and burning it inside the converter and this can be dangerous in some cases you can actually have a mini explosion\fire causing a good bit of damage. I hope this is helpful to anyone needing the answer..
If it does, it can burn out the catalytic converter which would cost over $1000 to repair.
Plugged fuel/air filter? Plugged catalytic converter?
If it has electronic fuel injection and a computer, yes.

Your car will not run better and you will get no better mileage. In fact you car will not run correctly without the converter as the ECU will not be able to adjust the correct fuel/air mixture properly without the converter on place. Know that is illegal in all 50 states to remove a catalytic converter. The fine is from $2,500 to $25,000.
Not unless your car has a flextek fuel converter installed on it. www.flextek.com
