In general, ANY exhaust system upgrade that significantly lowers the backpressure of the exhaust system (by exhaust flowing through it more easily) will improve fuel economy. This can be done with a "single" exhaust, but is sometimes easier to do with a "dual". An advantage of the duals is that you can use two mufflers rather than one free-flow muffler. This can either provide extremely low back-pressure, or - if you choose - retain more of the factory exhaust sound with just a slight sacrifice in back-pressure (but still much lower than the stock exhaust). The two three main upgrades that you can do to improve fuel economy are, in order of easiest and cheapest first: switch your whole drivetrain to premium synthetic lubricants, upgrade (replace) your engine air intake system, and install a tonneau cover. Each of those is likely to improve fuel economy by 5 to 10% (assuming you choose your lubricants carefully). Yes, dual exhaust will improve milage. Then again just changing to a free flow muffler and the pipe from there out will also give a slight increase. A good cold air intake, like AEM has ( non-oiled dry filter) will also give an increase. Unfortunately a tonneau cover will not. The way pick ups are designed, a cover, dropping or removing the tail gate will create turbulance that will increase drag and therefore reduce milage. with the tailgate up it actually forms a bubble that helps air flow over the truck. Right now I drive a 2010 F150 FX4. The only thing I did so far was oil and filter. I put a K&N oil filter on it and put 6 quarts of Royal Purple oil and 1 quart of Duralube in it. On the interstate with the a/c on and cruise control set at 65 I am getting between 24.1 and 24.6 mpg. I would try this on your truck, or any other vehicle first. Second would be find a reputable shop and just have them do the back half of the exhaust. Try for 3 inch pipe to the muffler and a single in/dual out with 2 1/4-2 1/5 pipe out works fine. Single in/single out set up the same way will give about the same results.
