Radiator plugged or restricted? Cooling system airbound? Water pump not circulating coolant? Radiator cap defective? Radiator hoses collapsing under pressure? Defective gauge/cooling temperature sensor?
Check the thermostat first. I had an intermittent overheating problem on my 02 for almost a year, changed the thermostat and it never happened again. If that doesn't work, secondly I would check the water pump.
I would start with checking your thermostat and thermostat housing. See if its regulating. If it is not replace the thermostat.
It depends. I Just fixed an overheating problem on my 98 contour. I replaced the thermostat (did not solve the problem). I then tested both thermostats (I put them both in a pan of boiling water and they both worked fine. Quick Check: When you put the heater on in side the car, if it does not blow hot air, most likely the problem is a blown water pump. Mine was in pieces when I looked at it. I replaced the water pump and everything appears to work fine now.Hi, I had the same problem in my 96 contour with the 2.0. I couldn't find the source of the leak and decided to put a bottle of Block Fix in the engine. You have to follow the directions to the letter for it to work properly, but it should fix your overheating problems as it did mine. I also am running mine without the thermostat and have been for over 1 year now and have had absolutely no more overheating problems. Contours, as mine does, tends to run a little bit hotter than most other vehicles, but its ok. Hope this info helps anybody who is experiencing this problem with their Contour. Mine runs like a champ now!!
check your heater core is it overheating?
are the cooling fans coming on
It MAY help with the overheating problem....but you really need to find out why it's overheating. Blown head gasket, stuck thermostat, bad water pump, fan not coming on, etc.
Your radiator might have a small pinhole in it, causing it to not build up pressure.
is it leaking anywhere? Can you be more specific other than overheating. I had the same problem 2 weeks ago. I fixed it.
Take your thermostat out and put everything back together, run your car without a thermostat... If your car no longer overheats, replace your thermostat.
The most common cause of overheating is a thermostat stuck in the closed position. However, other causes are: faulty water pump, clogged radiator, clogged hose(s), coolant leak or a broken drive belt. I had a 1987 legend with around 160K that was overheating. Antifreeze would boil out of the overflow. I changed my radiator and it fixed the problem.
My dad had the same problem with his sundance and it turned out he had a cracked head. Answer Check your heater, if you turn your heater on and it blows cold air, then its is likely that the water pump has either failed or the belt has separated, either by age or because the pulley has fallen apart (plastic - replaceable)
my jetta keeps overheating so i replaced the thermostat hoping that was the problem but know there telling me it might be the water pump check it out maybe its that
