My dad had the same problem with his sundance and it turned out he had a cracked head. Answer Check your heater, if you turn your heater on and it blows cold air, then its is likely that the water pump has either failed or the belt has separated, either by age or because the pulley has fallen apart (plastic - replaceable)

Have you see the viscous in the fan??? Sometimes it doesnt engaged and the fan does not take the correct speed and the engine is overheating. Sometimes it can be fixed up, but when its sealed you have to buy a new one.
Microscopic crack in the head that will open up at high RPMs, subsequently jettising the coolent and overheating the engine. Have the heads X-rayed, than have a good aluminum welder weld it.

JUST BOUGHT A 1994 FORD ESCORT FORMER OWNER REPLACED STEERING COLUMN, IGNITION BRAKES NEW CLUTCH. WHEN I AM IDLING OR STOPPING AND STARTING MY ENGINE GETS HOT. WHEN I GO HIWAY OR GET GOING FAST MY ENGINE COOLS OFF. WHAT COULD MY PROBLEM BE. I THOUGHT MAYBE MY THERMOSTAT WAS STICKING UNTIL I REACHED HIGHER SPEED. CANNOT FIND MY THERMOSTAT TO REPLACE IT. Not necessarily on either. A used computer will not require a reprogramming. Also, if the fan itself is damaged, then unit would be replaced not the computer.
I had a Contour that had a similar problem except it wouldn't shift out of first. It would just rev higher and higher put wouldn't upshift. It was the Vehicle Speed Sensor that was bad. Replaced it and it ran fine after that. This problem sounds similar. Hope this helps.
