It can happen. For example, while normally the Secretary of State is fourth in the line of Presidential succession, when Nixon was President his Secretary of State was Henry Kissinger, who was not a "natural-born citizen of the United States" and thus ineligible for the position of President.
I don't believe any of the current cabinet members would be ineligible under this rule, but obviously that could change at any time.

The most recent Cabinet member to become U. S. President was Herbert Hoover, who served as Secretary of Commerce from 1921 until 1928. (The most recent Cabinet member to become U. S. Vice President was Dick Cheney, who served as Secretary of Defense from 1989 until 1993.)
Cabinet members of the Executive Branch of the United States government are chosen by the president. However, they can only be approved by the US Senate.

It is extremely unlikely, so you do not have to worry.
The appointment power has become one of the chief powers of the President.
United States Cabinet nominees are chosen from a large pool of potential candidates. One of the few qualification restrictions is set out in Article one in the Constitution : "no person holding any office under the United States, shall be a member of either house during his continuance in office." If the President dies, the Vice President becomes President and under the terms of the 25th Amendment, he would nominate a new Vice President. If he were to die before the new VP could be confirmed by Congress, the Speaker of the House would become President. No- the President must be a natural born citizen.
There are fifteen cabinet members and only one vice-president , so the cabinet is bigger. The cabinet collectively has more power. The vice-president has only one real job and that is to decide tie votes in the Senate and unless the Senate is evenlhy balanced between parties, tie votes are rare. Of course, there is always a chance that the VP will become president and if that happens everything reverses- suddenly the cabinet has to beg to keep their jobs .
