During President Jackson's period of office the "Nullification Crisis", or "secession crisis," of 1828 - 1832, merged issues of sectional strife with disagreements over tariffs. Critics alleged that high tariffs (the "Tariff of Abominations") on imports of common manufactured goods made in Europe made those goods more expensive than ones from the northern U.S., raising the prices paid by planters in the South. Southern politicians argued that tariffs benefited northern industrialists at the expense of southern farmers."

The nullification crisis happened because the Congress made a law raising tariffs (taxes on imported goods). The South, thought it was more in favor of the North and did not want to pa it. South Carolina threatened to secede from the state unless they were lowered or taken away.

True. South Carolina didn't approve of the new tariff, because they felt it unfairly favored northern industry over southern consumers. So, they passed a law that claimed to "nullify" the law. Which pretty much meant that the states were able to nullify laws that the federal government passed. (They can't) Andrew Jackson was willing to lead the military into South Carolina to shut down their legislature.

I believe the Nullification gave states the right to refuse laws that were harmful to them. and the Tariffs were harmful to the south and west but the North wanted them..
