There is an incredible amount of avenues to participate in our government, the most common being casting a vote, and the least common being funding a candidate or being a member of a political organization. In addition to these two, the following are ways to engage in your local/state/national politics:
Joining civic associations
Supporting social movements
Writing to legislators
Fighting city hall
Writing to a local congressman
Voicing your views about political issues
Watching politics live (or even on television - CSPAN! <3)

Voting in a Presidential election is how most all people contribute to their government as this is their big leader. It is definitely the most common way of participating. The Congressional, state and local elections are smaller and are participated in by those more dedicated and patriotic.
